Under supervision, and according to established policies and procedures, a Chaplain Resident will provide spiritual care and counseling to patients and families and participate as a member of the health care team caring for patients/clients.  The Chaplain Resident will consider this is an educational position and duties will be assigned to maximize the pastoral experience.

Requirements:

General:  CPE Resident must be physically, emotionally, and spiritually able to provide timely, compassionate, and competent care to persons served or employed by the hospital, as demonstrated by the performance of duties outlined in this job description.

Interview: An interview with a qualified interviewer, as well as a committee representing the PAG, are required prior to admission to determine readiness for learning.

Academic:  Educational training (Master’s Level graduate degree preferred) in related field (such as Divinity, Biblical Studies/Religious Education, Counseling, etc.) or current enrollment in ministry formation toward one of the aforementioned degrees with an academic recommendation from the seminary or school.

Special training:  Successful completion of at least one unit of CPE or equivalent.

Experience:  Ideally, one year of ministry experience in a congregational or agency setting is preferred, and/or endorsement by congregational or denominational authority for ministry training.

Chaplain Resident participates in Clinical Pastoral Education program as required by standards of the departmental program and the National Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

Chaplain Resident has a full-time (40-hour) work week as negotiated with administrative and supervisory staff in conjunction with the resident’s learning contract. Chaplain Resident will have access to all nursing floors and the E.D.     

1. Accepts at least 2-3 floor assignments, to include attending interdisciplinary rounds. During 2nd and 3rd units accepts an additional departmental assignment (i.e., coordination of volunteers, scheduling of basic students, sacramental services) and an interdisciplinary assignment (i.e. new hire orientation, in-services, worship services etc.).

2. Visits patients and families to assess spiritual needs such as psychosocial issues, personal adjustment to illness or disability and provides pastoral ministry guidance. Participates in regular shifts of 8 hours in duration including day, afternoon and night shifts.

3. Provide religious/spiritual support to patients, families and staff.  This may include sacramental ministry, prayer, religious services or other appropriate religious functions.

4. Confers with patient care personnel as requested in response to medical ethical concerns or issues such as transplants, autopsies and so forth.

5. Acts as a liaison between hospital staff and patient’s family during periods of crisis such as critical illness, surgery or death.

6. Records/documents in the patient’s electronic health record, a pastoral assessment, intervention and plan following patient visits.  Records/documents the administration of sacraments in appropriate area of the patient record.

7. Participates in inter-disciplinary team functions such as patient care conferences, referrals and appropriate consultations. May be active in hospital committees and in other related activities sponsored by the hospital.

8. Routinely and automatically responds to all death and trauma situations within his/her area of responsibility.  Coordinates crisis intervention and/or grief ministry as needed. Facilitates the handling of necessary release forms when a patient has died.

9. Acts as counselor/consultant to patients, staff and visitors regarding decisions of organ/tissue donation, advanced directives, medical care status, etc.

10. Attends scheduled Spiritual Care Department Staff meetings on scheduled work days.

11. Participate in the Back-up On-call Schedule, rotating coverage with the Spiritual care staff department.

12. Participate in both of the annual hospital memorial services and the Bridge of Life.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Participates in departmental planning, implementation of mission goals and objectives, daily reports and committee membership.

2. May develop and present orientation and continuing education programs regarding the objectives and practice of spiritual care for personnel and/or community groups as appropriate.

3. Embraces Standards of Excellence in order to provide and promote excellent care to both internal and external clients/patients.  Holds self and others accountable for behaviors that promote service excellence.
