General Summary

Picks surgical cases via a case cart system and utilization of the PYXIS system. Manages debiting and crediting of supplies. Accurately and completely pulls supplies and instruments for cases as well as stocking and restocking supplies.

Working Conditions

  • Works in clean, well ventilated environment where there are some discomforts due to noise from equipment.

  • Potential exposure to injury from needles and sharp instruments, and burns from heat generated equipment, exposure to communicable diseases.

  • Work requires considerable walking, standing, lifting and pushing in storing and delivering supplies.

  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, being able to control carts weighing between 200 and 500 pounds.

  • May be required to perform job duties at other Mercy campuses.

Essential Functions - % Time               

  • 25% Assists with inventory management of the OR Pyxis cabinets, both for the procurement of items for picking case carts as well as crediting the patient for all returned items.  

  • 20% Ensures all incoming inventory is properly identified and is put away in the correct locations and on a timely basis. Ensures accuracy of inventory and maintenance of expiration dates in Pyxis.

  • 10% Assists OR staff with troubleshooting Pyxis equipment.

  • 15% Practices aseptic technique          

  • 10% Collects data for statistics          

  • 5% Participates in departments meetings, in-services and QI planning. Completes required competencies and maintains Sterile Processing certification.

  • 5% Adheres to all standards and policies regarding safety/patient safety initiatives.

  • 10% Is responsible for all other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION

Required Minimum Education: High School diploma or GED

Preferred Education: Vocational/Technical Degree

Required: Current sterile processing certification from Certification in Board of Sterile Processing & Distribution (CBSPD) or International Association of Healthcare Management (IAHCSMM) or obtain within eighteen months of hire.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Years and Type of Experience:1-2 years of current experience in a perioperative setting (preferred)

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:Communication skills, computer software applications, ability to communicate with various departments, such as surgery to ensure work flow is most efficient and effective. Attention to detail required to document data and retain knowledge of various equipment and processes.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:Coordinate departmental tasks and respond to operational problems.
