SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Dental Hygienist assists the Dentist with various procedures performed at chair side in the Dental Clinic.  He/she operates a dental chair for the purpose of cleaning teeth and other needed dental care.   He/she is also responsible for administrative and patient follow up, EMR documentation related to dental care that has been provided to adults.  He/she takes and develops oral digital x-rays, maintains various dental and other patient care supplies and equipment; instructs/educates patients regarding proper oral health and other preventive measures; performs general receptionist/billing duties, and instrument sterilization duties.  Performs other duties and assignments as requested. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma (GED).
  • Completion of Dental Hygienist program and license

EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience as a dental hygienist
  • 1-3 years in dental office or clinic setting preferred. 
  • Experience with children and the elderly preferred.
  • Experience with the minority community preferred.
  • Experience with public community education preferred.
  • Basic CPR 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Requires dexterity and manual skills for instrument manipulation, use and transfer.
  • Mechanical ability to test, maintain and operate dental equipment. 
  • Patience and understanding to deal with a variety of personality and age groups.  
  • Work is routine.
  • Makes decisions based on detailed procedures.
  • Assists dentist with dental care for age groups (children, adults, special needs and elderly).
  • Has clear-cut alternatives available and usually follows a specified course of action.
  • Impact is generally focused on immediate work area.
  • Some tasks have direct relationship to payments to hospital.
  • Influence is indirect and supportive in nature.
  • Works independently for most activities.  Interdependent and/or supportive at chairside.
  • Interactions can at times be complex, e.g., when identifying payment plans or collecting patient data.
  • Requires good customer skills. 

PRINCIPAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1.  Prepares for procedures/exams.

     a.  Greets and escorts patient to operatory.

     b.  Prepares patient, equipment and supplies for procedures and exams.

     c.  Obtains and/or assembles chart. 

2.  Follows and maintains OSHA and Universal precaution before/after and during dental procedures. 

     Uses suction devices, water spray cotton rolls, holders, and cheek/tongue retractors to keep oral

     operating area clean during dental procedures.

3.  Prepares restorative materials and dental cements to be used during dental procedures.

4.  Takes and develops intra-oral and extra-oral digital radiographs.

5.  Assists Dentist with oral exams, cleanings, extractions, root canal therapy and fillings as needed.

6.  Provides education and instruction.

     a.  Gives post-procedure instruction to patient and/or significant other.

     b.  Educates regarding proper oral hygiene and overall dental preventative care. 

7.  Maintains dental instruments.

     a.  Washes and soaks instruments in a solution before processing in ultrasonic cleaner.

     b.  Sets up instruments for sterilization by packaging, labeling and dating.    

     c.  Processes instruments using the Ultrasonic for sterilization.

Maintains disinfecting solutions according to protocol Oil and lubricate instruments as needed. 

8.  Maintains operatory room.

     a.  Ensures all equipment is clean and/or sterile and in good working order.

     b.  Maintain adequate stock. 

     c.  Cleans rooms between procedures.

     d.  Sets up for cases.

9. Performs general receptionist duties and administrative assistant duties.

Answers incoming calls, places outgoing calls. Assists in completion of health history questionnaires. Initiates and/or assists with registration paperwork for processing for patients, as needed.  Helps to obtain signatures for consents.    

10. Assists, when necessary to complete paperwork for billing of procedures, treatments and exams.

     a.  Obtains signature.

     b.  Identifies correct plans.

     c.  Completes appropriate forms and routes to appropriate individuals/area.

Directs patients to patient accounting as necessary. Communicates information and transactions with Dentist and Assistant Dental Supervisor. 

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES – Other:

1.  Performs General Clerical Duties To Assist Dental Staff

     a.  Scan patient information into EMR.

     b.  Completes lab logs as per protocol. 

2.  Makes follow up appointments for patient in Ambulatory Dental Clinic as needed. 

3.  Report the needs for additional orders and stock supplies to the Assistant Dental             

     Supervisor/Manager.   

4.  Assists in maintaining a clean and safe environment.

5.  Assesses maintenance needs.

     a.  Informs the Assistant Dental Supervisor or Manager regarding the need for maintenance reqs.

     b.  Performs simple maintenance (batteries, fluids for dental equipment, etc.).

6.  Attends monthly staff meetings.

7.  Is supportive to dental residency programs. 

8.  Performs miscellaneous duties as requested.

9.  Collects necessary statistics regarding patients for audits. 

10. Assists in the collection and analysis of data for QA.

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

24 CE’s requirement every 2 years for Licensure.
