SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

A Radiologic Technologist certified in BLS performs duties necessary for cardiac catheterization, percutaneous coronary intervention, electrophysiology procedures, and peripheral procedures at a technical and professional level requiring minimal supervision of technical detail. Performs a variety of technical procedures that will require responsible independent judgment. Assumes responsibility and initiative for designated areas and procedures as required. Recognizes the purpose of employment is to prioritize the patient as number one to align performance with the organization’s mission statement, values and goals and to achieve the highest level of customer satisfaction and to put forth the utmost quality as a Cardiovascular Radiologic Technologist.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:

ARRT registered, with previous experience preferred.

Ohio Department of Health License for Radiologic Technologist

Mandatory BLS certifications required with renewal every 2 years.

EXPERIENCE:

2 years of general radiography required

Previous cath lab experience beneficial

PRINCIPAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES (Essential Functions):

  • Participates in patient transport.
  • Prior to transport, assures proper patient identification. 
  • Prior to transport, checks patient chart for proper consent forms, lab data,
  • history and physical, completion of pre-cath checklist, allergies, face sheet,
  • Assists with the continuance of all necessary life support/therapeutic equipment such as oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, IABP,TVP, etc.
  • Assists patient safely to and from hospital bed/stretcher/wheelchair/procedure table, etc.
  • Practices safe transport via side rails and safety straps.
  • Assists in transports requiring more than one person.
  • Uses monitor/defibrillator during transport with critically ill patients.
  • Performs all of the above duties in an efficient manner to assure acceptable turn around times.
  • Assists in pre-catheterization patient preparation.
  • Prep patient when necessary
  • Properly attaches ECG electrodes/BP cuff.
  • Checks appropriate pulses and marks them with an “X”.  Discerns using 0 – 3 scale as to the intensity of the pulse.  Documents temperature.
  • Asks patient medical history.
  • Rechecks chart for current appropriate data, initiates request for missing data per required documentation, lab work, etc.
  • Provides post-catheterization recovery of patients.
  • Makes sure ECG leads are attached and producing an optimal signal.
  • Makes sure blood pressure cuff is on the patient and set to take blood pressure every 5 minutes while the sheath(s) are being pulled out and pressure being applied.
  • Removes sheaths correctly and applies pressure to control bleeding via hand hold or V Pad.
  • Monitors patient’s distal pulse to assure minimal occlusive pressure.
  • Monitors patient’s vital signs for duration of hold.  Takes appropriate action to counter patient reactions (vasovagal).
  • Applies pressure and/or op-site dressing correctly.
  • Does additional assessment of distal pulse prior to transport.
  • If necessary, assists with transport to nursing unit.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibility with pre and post catheterization patient care.
  • Vitals, HR, BP, temp (autonomic and manual).
  • Performing 12 lead ECGs.
  • Maintains patient privacy via use of closing curtains and voice level during conversation.
  • Implements bed pan/urinal use when required.  Cleans and/or disposes of containers correctly.
  • External urinary catheter application.
  • Ordering and serving of meals
  • Cleaning duties (making up stretchers, room turnover, stocking, etc.)
  • Participates in procedure room patient set-up.
  • Instructs patient for procedure.
  • Assures that the physician has an acceptable ECG signal before the procedure begins.
  • Prepares sterile tray for cardiac catheterization in accordance to lab standards.
  • Prepares special catheters for all procedures, e.g., angioplasty, etc.
  • Drapes patient observing proper sterile technique.
  • Prepares and arranges procedural apparatus (e.g., needles, instruments, introducers, wires, catheters, etc.)
  • Assists/assures establishment of air free fluid transmission lines and transducer domes.
  • Prepare/operates all special equipment.  High pressure injector and/or ACIST device.
  • Assists with the performance of the procedures.
  • Scrubs in and assist physician.
  • Uses proper sterile technique when gowning and gloving.
  • Monitors overall patient status, especially ECG and pressure.  Notifies physician immediately of any danger.
  • Assists physician with patient communication.
  • Activates and check utilized equipment at the start of each day.
  • Powers up x-ray equipment.
  • Prepares cleaning solutions for daily sterile cleaning.
  • Operates x-ray/digital equipment.
  • Monitors/resets fluoroscopy timer.
  • Sets proper exposure factors.
  • Monitors heat units of x-ray reset.
  • Operates x-ray reset.
  • Familiar with image intensifier mode selections.
  • Prepares digital computer for acquisition.
  • Stores and processes digitally acquired images per physician request to CD.
  • Makes final prints of digitally acquired images per physician request to CD.
  • Performs compact disc processing when required.
  • Copy CD from CPACs.
  • Records patient name, medical record number, account number, date of birth, copy of sticker, and date on CD and holder.
  • File and retrieve CD’s.
  • Communicates information effectively and promptly.
  • Communicates with patient, family members, visitors, co-workers and
  • Physicians in a positive and courteous manner.
  • Reports all patient care, procedural of equipment problems to physician and Nurse Manager.
  • Communicates with Nurse Manager and incompatibilities and/or changes in scheduling.
  • Participates in research projects assuring complete and accurate documentation.
  • Assists in inventory control.
  • Lab stock levels are closely monitored.  Recommendations for purchase of
  • nonstock items are presented to the supervisor on a timely basis to prevent depletion.
  • Cath lab inventory maintained in the storeroom is to be closely monitored with any deviations in acceptable levels reported immediately to the Assistant Nurse Manager.
  • Assists with the other inventory of supplies.
  • Restocks all cath lab as needed throughout the day and as assigned.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Follows departmental dress code.
  • Uses proper hand washing technique before and after patient contact.
  • Uses proper isolation precautions when working with isolated patients.
  • Disposes of needles and sharp objects in sharps container.
  • Brings attention to others concerning wet/slippery areas.  Makes accommodation to have the area cleaned/dried as soon as possible
  • Reports defective equipment, power cord, etc., promptly to supervisor
  • Practices radiation safety techniques.
  • Proper lead protective devices are worn during exposure to fluoroscopy and
  • radiations.
  • Badges are worn along with all lead protective devices.  Badges are turned into hospital radiation safety personnel for quarterly dosimetry report.
  • Assists with identification and removal of nonessential personnel from the lab during generation of x-rays.
  • Performs duties/working areas as scheduled.  Maintains acceptable attendance record.
  • Participates in emergency call coverage.
  • Participates as scheduled.  Responds to hospital within 30 minutes.
  • The emergency patient procedure is ready to commence within 45 minutes of the initial employee contact.
  • Accepts responsibility for notifying hospital operator of changes in phone number and/or call status.
  • Assumes professional  responsibility, accountability and initiative.
  • Maintains current State Licensure is applicable. 
  • Maintains current BCLS certification.
  • ARRT compliance.
  • Completes department competencies.
  •  Performs other duties as assigned by CVL Nursing Manager/Assistant Nurse Manager.
  • Communicates availability to extra assignments to Nurse Manager/Assistant Nurse Manager.
