Job Title:Instrument Specialist


Oversight of instrument tray builds and maintenance including inventory of current stock and creation of new trays as needed. Works directly with SPD Manager, OR Managers/Supervisor and Speciality Leads to ensure that instrument needs of the surgical teams are met. Provides support to Manager for auditing and maintaining proper documentation for regulatory agencies including sterilization processes and staff education.

% Time

30%Operates computer programs designed to track instruments and equipment. Responsible for maintaining all audits in instrument tracking database including instrument repairs, graphics, countsheets, assembly guidelines and manufacturers Instructions for use.

20%Maintain inventory of instrumentation, Implants and coordinates adding or deleting instruments/Implants based upon case volume and usage.  Completes order entry for items as needed. 

15%Identifies slow and non-moving instrumentation and coordinates the storage and distribution with OR Managers, Supervisors, Speciality Leads, OR Supply Navigator and ORMC's. Coordinates onboarding of new instruments and supplies. 

10%Understands and enforces recommendations by AMMI, CDC, OSHA, FDA and Joint Commission 

5%Prepares and manages a system for outdates within the department.

5%Gives immediate attention to obtaining unavailable/ out of stock instrumentation or equipment by borrowing from area hospitals, contacting sales representatives, or rush ordering the same (or substitute) item from a secondary vendor.

5%Participates in the daily Crystal Ball and collaborates with OR staff on the upcoming Surgey schedule. Collaborates with vendors on getting loaner equipmnet for up coming surgeries.  

5%Assists with new hire orientation, training, special projects as requested. 

5%Assumes responsibility in the department in the absence of personnel including Leadership.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS (must be non-expired/active unless otherwise stated):

Required:Certification by IAHCSMM for Certifed Sterile Processing Technician 

Preferred: Certification by IAHCSMM for Certified Instrument Specialist


Minimum Years and Type of Experience: Three to five years of work experience with surgical instrumentaion and/or instrument tracking databases

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Knowledge of IFU's, sterile processing protocols and regulatory agency requirements for Sterile Processing. 

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: Basic computer skills with knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook.
