A Certified health professional who, under the direction of an authorized user, applies the art and skill of diagnostic imaging through the safe and effective use of ultrasound.  Provides direct patient care. Coordinates daily activities of the Echo department including providing overall daily operations of the Echo departments for staffing, including on call responsibilities and patient flow.  Serves as the technical director for the Echo accreditation purposes.

Leads the Echo daily operations by: coordinating work and on call schedules, providing management with input regarding job responsibilities, attends meetings and services as a liaison to staff, communicates with vendors to keep current with the latest technological advances and service needs, ensures work areas, equipment, and supplies are stocked and maintained in a clean, orderly, and safe condition, and reports/tracks any equipment malfunctions, assumes additional responsibility to improve department performance, markets echo ultrasound services to Medical Staff to assure timely scheduling of patients and updates them regarding new services provided in the department, and serves as the technical director for the echo accreditation process.

Maintains a direct patient work load in addition to lead responsibilities.  Obtains and records images necessary to demonstrate normal and pathological findings, documents all pertinent information (e.g., lab values, patient histories), demonstrates and maintains the clinical competency as required for assignments to work with patients in the echo department and aligns with the patients growth and developmental needs, particularly related to patients who are: adolescent, adults and geriatric as deemed necessary by the designated facility, conducts procedures in a timely fashion utilizing time wisely for efficient department operation, prepares and evaluates the patient for testing as required, and monitors the condition of the patient and medical equipment, documents sonographer's impression and relays findings to the physician.

Demonstrates and assists in education of the on-boarding of new staff within the department for policy and procedural interpretation and guidance, reviews all appropriate imagining department and ultrasound department manuals annually.

Enters and scans all work appropriately into the computer system(s) as required, including documentation of all charges.  Oversees and monitors the incomplete work reports, performs other clerical duties as needed to maintain optimum department needs.

Monitors performance improvement goals of the department(s), participates and leads performance improvement projects, and assists in acquisition of performance improvement data.


  • Required Minimum Education:Vocational / Technical Degree
    Specialty/Major:Has completed the appropriate training program that is patient care related.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS (must be non-expired/active unless otherwise stated):

  • ARDMS certified registered in echo sub specialty. CPR certified. RDCS required.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience: Five years full time clinical echo ultrasound experience.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:Proven previous working knowledge of EPIC and the hospital's cardiology information system.
