Radiology Student Technologist Radiology

I.Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The primary responsibility of this position is produce high quality radiographic procedures and related techniques, producing images for the interpretation by, and at the request of, a licensed independent practitioner under the guidance of a Radiologist Technologist

IL       Employment Qualifications

  • Must be a current student in a radiology program
  • Must hold a SC Limited License
  • CPR certification required.
  • Basic computer knowledge.

Ill.       Essential Job Functions

Obtains patient's clinical history and appropriate lab work ensuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed practitioner.

Operates radiographic equipment and accessories.

Position and immobilize patient to best demonstrate anatomic area of interest, respecting patient ability and comfort.

Applies principles of radiation protection to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others.

Assumes responsibility for provision of physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures.

Performs radiographic procedures by selecting and operating imaging equipment, and/or associated accessories to successfully perform procedures.

Verifies informed consent and completes pre and post procedure documentation.

Assists licensed practitioner with fluoroscopic and specialized radiography procedures. Applies appropriate aseptic surgical technique as needed.

Performs timeout as required per policy.

Identifies, prepares and/or administers medications/contrast as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.

Evaluates images for technical quality.

Documents patient dose exposures.

Recognizes signs and symptoms of an emergency. Initiates basic life support action when necessary.

Assesses patient risk for allergic reaction to contrast media prior to administration and can assist in the initial treatment of its adverse effects associated to its administration.

Uses PACS, RIS, Transport Command Center and eMAR with proficiency.

Professionally interacts with physicians, technologist, physician offices, hospital staff, patient family members and patients.

Completes assigned tasks in a time frame appropriate for the situation; demonstrates flexibility to fluctuation in workload.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in Radiology. Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.

Provides patient care to Neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, geriatrics.

IV.Other Job Functions

Prepares the patient for procedures, including providing instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety.

Verifies patient pregnancy status.

Communicates effectively, compassionately, and respectively to all.

Maintains confidentiality of the patient's protected health information in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

Maintains patient safety in accordance with the National Patient Safety Guidelines.

Observes Universal Protocols and Universal precautions.

Provides patient education.

Participates in the department's quality assessment and improvement plan.

Transports patients as necessary.

Obtains outside imaging records if needed.

Restock rooms and maintain cleanliness of work area.

V.Working Conditions

  • The individual performing this job may reasonably anticipate coming into contact with human blood and other potentially infectious materials. Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and adhere to Infection Control policies.
  • Activities are non-sedentary. May assist in positioning, moving, and transporting patients and positioning oneself appropriately to operate equipment and assist patients. May be exposed to combative people. Applies policies regarding electrical, chemical, and radiation safety.
  • Works in an area where there is potential radiation exposure, but which is monitored by radiation badges.
  • Requires viewing and operating various computers and printers.
