General Summary

The Supervisor has knowledge in one or more areas of technical specialty such as: Chemistry, Hematology, Immunohematology, Microbiology, Histology or Cytology that is sufficient to ensure the precise, accurate and timely performance of routine and complex testing. 

Duties include maintaining a schedule that provides adequate staffing, training of new associates and documentation of associate performance levels.  The Technical Team Leader may fulfill the role of Technical Supervisor for area(s) of technical responsibility.  He/she is responsible for maintaining the quality of the testing performed in the area of responsibility and validation of new tests prior to addition to the in-house menu.  The Technical Team Leader communicates effectively, and encourages as well as provides feedback, in dealing with all associates of the Laboratory, Mercy and its customers.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Is a college graduate with a baccalaureate degree in science and is registered as a medical technologist (MT, MLS, BB, C, CG, CT, H, HTL, M or MB) or specialist (SBB, SC, SCT, SH, SM or PA) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) as appropriate to position.

Four years of laboratory experience in high and/or moderate complexity testing, under a qualified director.

Service oriented attitude to relate and communicate effectively with patients, families and medical staff.


Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

Ability to think critically and make quick decisions in order to respond to unexpected situations.

Intermediate computer skills required.  Ability and willingness to learn multiple software applications.

Organizational skills needed to design and plan work flow. Process improvement oriented.

Ability to concentrate and pay attention to details.

Working Conditions

Works with potential exposure to infectious diseases such as Hepatitis or HIV, caustic agents, needle punctures and other hazards; intermittent exposure to odors and fumes, works in ventilated and well lighted areas.
