Under the general supervision of the Lead Maintenance Mechanic repairs and maintains hospital buildings, machinery and mechanical equipment in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, blueprints, manufacturer’s specifications.  Uses hand and power tools and precision measuring and testing instruments.  In doing so, observes mechanical devices in operation, disassembles equipment to repair and/or replace defective parts, and/or tests equipment to ensure devices are in good operating order.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to repair mechanical equipment and machinery, setup and operate lathe, drill press, grinder and other metal-working tools, and read and understand blueprints at a level normally acquired through completion of technical school and up to a minimum 576 hours of technical training beyond high school in a maintenance field preferred.     
  • Two years’ experience in a commercial/industrial work setting.
  • Analytical skills necessary in order to make calculations for installation and repair of equipment.
  • Possesses a state high pressure boiler operator’s license, or third class engineer’s license if applicable.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 50% of work time when observing equipment, disassembling devices, making repairs and maintaining logs.
  • Occasional (up to 30% of work time) exposure to hazards including cuts, burns and the like when operating repair equipment.
  • Substantial physical effort exerted 20 to 50% of work time.
  • Ability to walk, stand and bend more than 80% of work time.
