Under supervision, performs clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance, in compliance with established departmental and regulatory agency guidelines. The medical technologist also maintains cooperative working relationships with intradepartmental and interdepartmental personnel.

*Performs routine and special laboratory tests within a designated area with limited interpretive responsibilities.

a. Accurately and safely performs laboratory procedures with supervision as needed.

b. Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from supervisor or pathologist.

c. Utilizes resources, procedures and reference ranges, appropriate for the age of each patient, in the performance of laboratory tests and the reporting of test results.

d. Correlates abnormal lab results with clinical information to determine validity and reasonableness of data within an established time limit. Maintains abnormal results log according to protocol.

e. Immediately alerts physicians, pathologists, or nursing personnel of unusual and/or panic values according to established criteria and carries out appropriate documentation.

f. Determines need for confirmatory testing or specimen recollection when abnormal test results occur.

g. Follows through with incomplete procedures to ensure continuity of patient care.

2. Performs quality control testing and review within a designated area.

a. Performs quality control tests according to procedure and maintains all necessary documentation.

b. Analyzes quality control data, takes appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits and documents actions taken. Provides assistance to laboratory co- workers in resolution of similar problems and seeks help from supervisor as required.

c. Holds patient results until out of control situations are resolved. Reports unresolved situation to the supervisor, or where appropriate, to the pathologist.

d. Reviews master logs and outstanding specimen reports to detect clerical/procedural errors.

e. Analyzes proficiency testing specimens in the same manner as patient specimens, in a program for the provision of quality laboratory testing.

3. Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting.

a. Observes and follows department preventive maintenance schedules.

b. Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, routines, problems, and corrective actions taken.

c. Performs limited trouble shooting and repair activities as required and documents

according to protocol.

4. Performs computer and clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory area.

a. Interacts with the laboratory information system on a daily basis for the purpose of result review, result entry, worksheet creation, and multiple other activities in a competent manner.

b. Performs troubleshooting activities on a variety of computer-controlled instruments, safely and competently.

c. Maintains files and other records as assigned, pertinent to the laboratory area.

5. Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs.

*a. Performs specimen collection and processing duties as needed or assigned and according to policies established in the phlebotomy area.

b. Attends and participates in the preparation and/or presentation of the laboratory continuing education program.

*c. Exhibits professional, respectful, and caring behavior towards patients and families, fellow employees, physicians, supervisors, and other hospital personnel.

6. Other Responsibilities:

1. Performs other related duties as assigned.

2. Assists the supervisor in inventory control and requisition of supplies.

3. Assists the supervisor in quality-assurance activities.

4. Assists the supervisor in training of new employees.


Associate degree in Medical Technology from an accredited program or equivalent training, education and experience that meets CLIA requirements for high complexity testing personnel.

Licensure / Certification ASCP certification or equivalent nationally recognized Medical Laboratory Technician certification or eligible preferred.
