Medical Lab Tech

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures performs testing on neonate, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • 65% - Conducts routine clinical laboratory tests and surveys rotating between assigned stations.
  • 23% - Records test results according to established procedures and reports results; refers abnormal test results and/or problems to appropriate personnel.
  • 2% - Inventories routinely used supplies in order to maintain established levels; records stock received and marks with date.
  • 2% - Prepares standard solutions and reagents according to established formulas.
  • 2% - Maintains equipment and notifies Medical Technologists regarding serious equipment malfunctions.
  • 2% - Prepares specimens for analysis and may be responsible for establishing priorities in testing.
  • 2% Assists in the demonstration of testing procedures and equipment to students and new employees.
  • 2% Maintains work area and equipment in clean and orderly condition.

MINIMUM EDUCATION

Required Minimum Education:  2 Year/Associates Degree

Specialty/Major: Medical Laboratory

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS (must be non-expired/active unless otherwise stated):

Required: MLT Certification

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Years and Type of Experience: 3 years experience working in a medical laboratory

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and clients.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: Visual acuity to distinguish fin gradation of color and to closely examine specimens micro-and macroscopically.

This position requires the incumbent to demonstrate proficiency in clinical skills for patients in the following age categories:

Medical Technologist/Medical Lab Scientist

Performs complex clinical laboratory procedures and interprets and analyzes results. Analyzes test systems for accuracy and clinical value. Provides care to neonate, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Bachelor of Science or Medical Technology Degree with MT or CLS certification as a generalist.
  • Interpersonal skills, which support effective and professional interactions with staff and clients.
  • Manual dexterity and color discrimination for safe operation of instruments and handling of specimens.
  • Ability to operate a computer.
  • Meets minimum continuing education and competency requirements.
  • Ability to prioritize and exercises independent judgment in a complex work environment.

Working Conditions

  • Work involves intermittent periods of walking and standing. Visual strain associated with close examination of specimens.
  • Works primary in a patient care and laboratory setting.
  • Exposure to needle injuries and combative patients during sample collection.
  • Work may be stressful due to demands for high degrees of productivity and accuracy.
  • Regular exposure to unpleasant odors, fumes, hazardous and biohazardous material.
