Summary of Primary Function:

The hospital site Director of Pharmacy is responsible for the optimization of acute care pharmacy operations and clinical services at the facility. The director will help to ensure pharmaceutical care is delivered according to federal and state regulations, hospital policies and universally accepted practices and procedures.  This oversight may extend into retail, infusion services, and other non-acute ambulatory pharmacy services. This leader is responsible for managing and leading pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other support staff who provide patient care or supportive services for respective areas of oversight.  The leader partners with site nursing, medical, and administration leaders to optimize patient care through clinical pharmacy services and ensures appropriate drug storage and preparation.  Finally, the leader will lead and manage pharmacy patient care services and operations, medication use outcomes and stewardship, planning and project management, human resource management, scholarship, and community service in associated areas of responsibility.   All responsibilities are accomplished in collaboration with the system-level pharmacy leadership team and local hospital leadership team. The scope and complexity of the position requires successful leaders to possess a diverse and highly developed skill set including but not limited to: time-management, communication, creativity, vision, teamwork, management, leadership, clinical knowledge base/skills, mentorship, change management, and project management.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide strategic planning, management, and oversight of all pharmacy related activities within the hospital system and supportive of system-level initiatives involving change and support for pharmaceutical care across the hospital.

  • Develop/support initiatives to manage pharmacy operating budget and a reduction of pharmacy supply cost through promoting and implementing cost containment strategies that benefit the Ministry.

  • Promote and enhance pharmacy care by providing leadership/support to patient care and quality initiatives in acute and non-acute areas (clinical activities, Meds-to-Beds, dosing services)

  • Select, train/orient, and assign department staff (either directly or through subordinate supervisors).  Develop standards of performance, evaluates performance, and initiates recommendations for personnel actions.

  • Assess and standardize medication dispensing practices and pharmacy workflows, develop department goals and objectives, and encourages team member growth and development.

  • Develop and establish operation procedures consistent with accrediting bodies, as well as state and federal rules overseeing pharmacy practice.  Establish policies to ensure adequate execution; appraises and evaluates subordinate and system performance regularly.   

  • Responsible for helping hospital site adhere to local sites in collaborating with IT and supply chain across BSMH to support safe, standard, and effective medication usage and practices

  • Collaborate and work with hospital/medical staff committee meetings as required.

3 years – progressive hospital or healthcare system pharmacy leadership

  • Strong interest in pharmacy practice advancement and pharmacy services leadership

  • Ability to work in a complex team environment and to collaborate with both external and internal professionals and other customers

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; communication style that is open and fosters trust, credibility and understanding.

  • Computer skills – word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint®, drug databases

  • Familiarity with various software, equipment and technology necessary to provide pharmacy services

  • Able to demonstrate skills in prioritization, development of SMART goals and objectives, problem solving, team building, decision making, time management and strategic planning

  • Knowledge of pharmacy services within acute, infusion, and ambulatory care environment

  • Exercises good judgment and ability to act decisively at the right time

  • Ability to positively affect collaboration, promote teamwork and achieve consensus
